About Course
Conceptual Understanding, Contextual Application, and Evidence of Learning

Students with a deep understanding of math understand how to solve problems, what strategies they can use, and can explain the “why” behind their solution. Through intentional instruction that focuses on conceptual understanding, evidence of learning, and problem solving in authentic, real-world contexts, students will achieve at high levels both within and beyond elementary school.
(3-5) This session is designed to:
- Clarify the meaning of all four operations for students in grades 3-5
- Provide a coherent approach to embedding math property work (commutative, associative, and distributive) consistently across grade levels
- Empowering teachers to develop an approach to instruction that considers conceptual understanding and contextual problem solving.
(K-2) This session is designed to:
- Clarify the importance of using math content as a way to help students make sense of the world around them
- Connect concrete and abstract representations to help students deepen their understanding and efficiency when solving problems.
- Develop teacher clarity regarding the progression of learning expectations within and across grade levels.

Scot Curran
Scot Curran is an expert in mathematics instruction, supporting teachers by clarifying math content expectations across grade levels and demonstrating practical application during instruction. Molly Curran
Molly Curran, a former teacher and team leader, has worked across various grade levels and states, giving her a deep understanding of the challenges educators face. Her leadership was crucial in Mountain Meadow Elementary achieving PLC Ambassador School status and the White River School District earning PLC Model District status. Today, Molly specializes in supporting school and district teams to enhance mathematics instruction. She expertly guides teams in creating learning target progressions, designing formative assessments, and structuring instruction using High Quality Instructional Resources, demonstrating practical teaching methods for math standards.
